Arizona Clay

Arizona Clay
Always so independent
‘Til one day she met him
He liked her tomboy side
Not too girly, not too shy
He was helpless
She brought him to his knees
Blue-green eyes
And straight blonde hair
Beauty so humble
He couldn’t help but stare
She knew what she was doing
Standing in the tall green grass
With that sundress on…
So she makes a plan to run away
From the fear she says will stay
Unless she rides the rails southwest
Through the Mesas in her mind
Mountains sooth her Indian burns
Give her a place to hide
But still she cries inside
Even visits to the Christian mission
Can’t seem clear her mind
In just a few days
She stops feeling that way
And says goodbye…
Now with tempers high and air so dry
She drives West toward the sky
Into the warm red arms of Arizona clay
Her desert tears begin to fall
Canyons learn to tell it all
Wise from all that starlight in the past
She prays for dusk to cool her
Maybe a mirage to fool her
But still the heat's the same
And all that hurt remains
Then she looks at me and says,
“Good, bad or ugly,
At least somebody loves me…”
She drinks her last Corona
And drives down to Sedona
Jumps into the Benz
Just to feel the breeze
As the sun is setting
Years of her depression
Fill her bones
And chill her knees
She stops in the haunted mining town
Grabs another cold one
Just to feel alive
She’ll never run from the sun
Or the bullet of a gun
But she’ll say goodbye…
Remain in the desert
Run to the sea
(She’ll change her mind)
Always got reasons to leave
(She’ll say goodbye)
Remain in the desert
Run to the sea
(She'll change her mind)
Always got reasons to leave
(She’ll say goodbye)
Remain in the desert
Run to the sea…
Always got reasons to leave
(And change her mind)

Sell Out

Sell Out
Time to sell out
Sell your soul to the devil
Time to give in
Time to sell out
Sell your soul to money
Just let ‘em win
You spent your whole life
Trying to make things right
But now as you fall
No one cares at all
Sell out, sell out
Have your way with me
Sell out, sell out
Have your way with me
So, why’d you sell out?
Sell your soul to the devil
Why’d you give in?
Yeah, why’d you Sell out?
Just to make money
You can’t let ‘em win
You spent every day
Finding other ways
And as you fall
No don’t care at all
…Sell out
Sell out, sell out
Have your way with me
Sell out, sell out
Have your way with me
(Somehow I lost my love for everything)
Just let them say what they say
They’ll say it anyway
(Somehow I lost my love for everything)
Just let them say what they say
They’ll say it anyway
Sell out, sell out
Have your way with me
Sell out, sell out…

Lucky Few

The Lucky Few
I followed a path that promised perfection
A guaranteed course and life made in heaven
But no matter what you do
Happiness is for the lucky few
For the lucky few
For the lucky few
I've met some who've tried rebelling and running
Only to find life's a struggle for nothing
And no matter what they do
Happiness is for the lucky few
For the lucky few
For the lucky few
Somewhere back at the start
Truth set ‘em free
Luck came from the heart
As I sit here so broken, ugly and worn
Maybe there's a life beyond this storm
‘Cause the lighthouse runs dark
And wind it blows cold
Many put faith in only what they hold
For the lucky few
For the lucky few
So, please hear the prayers of unlucky fools
Please hear the prayers of unlucky fools
Please hear the prayers of unlucky fools
Please hear the prayers…

Talking Dust Bowl Blues

Talking Dust Bowl Blues
Back in Nineteen Twenty-Seven
I had a little farm
And I called that heaven
Well, the prices up and the rain come down
And I hauled my crops all into town
I got the money
Bought clothes and groceries
Fed the kids
Took it easy
Rain it quit and the wind got high
And the black ol' dust storms filled the sky
And I swapped my farm for a Ford machine
And I filled it full of this gas-i-line
And I started it rollin’
Drifting to California
—
We remember the old tractor
Sitting back down there
Covered up with dust
The cows standing up on top of the barn
Looking out across that dead sea of dust
And they said…
“No mister, we’d rather be in jail here
Than sitting down there at that farm.”
…It’s the manner of having the money
They don’t ask you where you got it
How you got it
Who you got it off of or nothing else
Just so you got the do-re-mi boy
That’s the main thing
You can gamble for it
Lie for it, steal for it
Bum for it, beg for it
Do anything else in the world for it
You can even chase people
Out of their house and home
Do-re-mi

Anchor

Anchor
I've been writing
The same song for years
I don't know
And I don't really care
I only care…
Only care for you
I’ve lost the purpose
I’ve searched for, for years
I don’t know
It all disappeared
But, I really did care
Really did care…
For you
No one ever thought I could
Pull up the anchor
Yeah I was only trying to set you free
Now I can’t even thank you
Can’t even love you
I might as well drift away
I’ve lost the meaning
I dreamed of for years
I don’t know
What I’m still doing here
Standing on stairs
Staring up looking at you
I’ve lost the focus
I’ve searched for with tears
I don’t know
It all disappeared
But, now that you’re here
Please know that I cared
No one ever thought I could
Pull up the anchor
Please let me set you free
Now I can’t even thank you
Can’t even love you
I might as well drift away
No one ever thought I could
Pull up the anchor…
Now I can’t even thank you
Can’t even love you
I might as well drift away

Burying the Box

Burying the Box
The day the box arrived
(No emotion)
Just like our lives cut off
(Everything stolen)
All those memories
(Just kept on hoping)
Just like our lives cutoff
(Unhinged and broken)
By never burying the box
(We left it open)
Just like our lives cutoff
(Unhinged and broken)
Letting fear decide
(We kept it open)
And never moving on
(Unhinged and broken)
Something 'bout that shovel
Pounding on the ground
Like the heart that use to beat
Looking at the stones
(Just words and numbers)
Just like our lives cutoff
(Cracked and broken)
Letting fear decide
(We still kept on hoping)
And never moving on
Cracked and broken
But, something 'bout that shovel
Pounding on the earth
Like a heart that use to beat
There’s something 'bout that shovel
Pounding on the earth
Like a heart that use to beat
Did you really make a difference?
You made a difference to her
Did you really make a difference?
You made a difference to her

Will You Ever Be Free?
02:40
|

Will You Ever Be Free?
Well he wasn’t even in the room
But he inflicted such a wound
So deep and wide
And it may never ever, ever go away
Oh, will you ever be free?
(Ever be free, ever be free)
Or will you keep on hurting me
Oh, will you ever be free?
(Ever be free, ever be free)
Or will you keep on hurting me
And she says it’s there all the time
But I really had no idea
It left a scar
And it never ever goes away
Oh, will you ever be free?
(Ever be free, ever be free)
Or will you keep on hurting me
Oh, will you ever be free?
(Ever be free, ever be free)
Or will you keep on hurting me
So sad to see
You’ll never be free
So sad to see
You’ll never be free
Ever be free, ever be free
Ever be free, ever be free
My god, will you ever be free?
Or will you keep on hurting me

Not My Home

Not My Home
Government
That's what we need
More government
That's what we need
More government
If I told someone
"I'm heading to the city"
I definitely wouldn’t mean Phoenix
The heat from the heavens
Is hot as hell
And, ain’t what I call home
When the compass and the clock
In your heart is fine
But the one on the wall is wrong
Don’t you know…
It’s time to head on home
Oh, when can we go home?
If I told someone
“I’m heading to the plains”
They’d probably call me a troubadour
The clouds in the mountains
Are as dry as wine
But, not what I call home
When the compass and the clock
In your heart is fine
But the one on the wall is wrong
Don’t you know…
It’s time to head on home
Oh, when can we go home?
Government
That's what we need
More government
That's what we need
(Oh, when can we go home?)
Small dogs bark
But rarely bite
Storm clouds form
No rain in sight
Government
That's what we need
More government
That's what we need
(Oh, when can we go home?)
Small dogs bark
But rarely bite
Storm clouds form
No rain in sight
You know it’s time to head on home
Oh, when can we go home?
Here they say freedom isn't free
But you know it should be
(When can we go home?)
Here they say freedom isn't free
But you know it should be
(When can we go home?)
